EMPATHY

She cried last night. Her eyes were open wide

And I observed an effervescent gleam,

For jubilation sparkled deep inside

Those winsome eyes, like sunlight on a stream

To see exuberance expressed with sheer

Abandonment was joy personified.

The thrilling sight was sanguine and sincere.

Impulsively I grasped her glee, and cried.

She cried today. Her eyes were flickering.

With every blink came iridescent glows

And tears of tenderness, meandering

Down carmine cheeks, like dewdrops on a rose.

To witness sympathy outpoured with pure

Emotion left me numb and stupefied.

The humbling sight was too much to endure.

Instinctively I shared her cares, and cried.

She cried again. I saw her sad eyes close

And access to their lustre was denied.

What light can sorrow radiate? Who knows?

Together, in each others arms, we cried.
