THE JOY OF GARDENING

The fruits of labour swell my heart with pride,
To see the lush green grass and bushes rise,
And fragrant flowers bloom on every side;
All colours of the rainbow fill my eyes.
The buzz of bees and birdsong brims the air,
The goldfinch, thrush and robin lead the way,
Like acrobats they glide and swoop and fly;
On lily pads below frogs croak and sway,
A dragonfly comes to the water's edge,
A slow worm basks upon a paving stone,
A butterfly surveys the laurel hedge;
In solitude I’m never quite alone.
